spindle stop / mount test indicator

TAIG Activity on CNCzone - Sun, 05/20/2018 - 13:48
Seems like a silly question, but: how to you properly stop the spindle from spinning when using a test indicator?

Like in this video:

Or if someone has a different method entirely would be interested in that as well.

I have this indicator set from LMC fwiw:

Taig Mill: Mach3 --> Mach4

TAIG Activity on CNCzone - Fri, 05/18/2018 - 15:31
I have a setup consisting of:

-- Taig mill;
-- 166 oz-in stepper motors;
-- Gecko G540;
-- 48V motor power;
-- Ethernet SmoothStepper;
-- Mach3; and
-- Windows XP/SP3.

I have been having some strange, infrequent but frustrating errors within Mach3 that I just haven't been able to figure out, and I'm considering migrating to Mach4 instead, to see if that may just work in my case.

Has anyone made this same migration from Mach3 to Mach4 with a similar setup? I would deeply appreciate any impressions or recommendations with this process, and/or a working and debugged profile if you've gone one.

Thanks for any advice;

1/4-20 slot nuts

TAIG Activity on CNCzone - Tue, 05/08/2018 - 16:45
Been thinking about some 1/4-20 hold-down solutions to compliment my 10-32 stiff, mainly for compatibility with some 1/4" accessories I have.

Toying with a few options,

  • T-nuts: Raised nut design, also will serve as hold-off (maybe only raised 1/8")
  • T-bolts: Some off the shelf 1/4 hex head bolts + "head carriers" to prevent spin and contact with slot walls

Some simplified drawings I made real quick in MS paint, sorry, CAD license is being used by someone for "real work" at the moment.

5/16 would be be great too, but would require even more elaborate workarounds, prob gonna focus 1/4-20 for now.

Wondering mainly if anyone has tired similar with/without success.

New Machine Build Deepgroove1 controller questions

TAIG Activity on CNCzone - Sun, 04/22/2018 - 17:46
Hello group, first I have had the old controller from Deepgroove1 for many years now (maybe 10?) and have really good service from that old controller but I have recently upgraded to the gecko controller from Deepgroove1 and ordered every option that Deepgroove1 offered like the relay and home switch jack because once I order may not be able to add them later.

So here are my questions...
1. What does the relay do and where is it located in or outside the box? (see attached photos).
2. What does the home switch jack do and where is it located in or outside the box? (see attached photos).
3. Also there is two plugs on the right in the back and I know the bottom one is for the power cord but what would you plug into the top one?

I don't know a lot about electronics and don't what to do something wrong on a new controller.

Taig T-Nuts Difference

TAIG Activity on CNCzone - Fri, 03/30/2018 - 12:27
New to machining and bought a Taig mini lathe to start learning as a hobby

Noticed there are two types of t-nuts holding attachments, one is a square flat and the other is rectangular with a ridge in the center. What’s the difference between them?
